Small Steps to Big Results: Set GOALS

One of our most important tasks as adults working with kids is to foster the growth and development of the young minds in our care. One vital skill we can help kids cultivate is the art of goal-setting. This skill enables students to practice patience and persistence, and heightens their motivation following each small success.

With a few simple tools, we can empower kids with effective goal-setting strategies, focusing on the power of recognizing small successes and developing patience to delay gratification.

At WINGS, we use the acronym GOALS to help teach kids these skills.

What does GOALS stand for?

Help kids understand what it means to strive for a desired outcome using the acronym GOALS.

GGet ready! Mentally prepare by setting a deadline and thinking of what you want to do and what you need to do to achieve it.

OOrganize. Layout all the things you need to do to make your goal happen.

AAsk for help! Find people and things that can help you get closer to your goal.

LLaunch. Get moving! Start everything you need to do.

SSummarize. Look back on everything you’ve done and think of what you could have done better or what the next goal could be.

Setting Realistic and Specific Goals

The first step in teaching kids goal-setting is to help them set clear, achievable objectives. Encourage them to be specific about what they want to achieve, whether it’s improving a skill, getting better grades, or developing a new hobby. Setting realistic goals ensures they do not feel overwhelmed, leading to better motivation and progress.

Example: A student who struggles with math might set a goal to improve their math grade from a C to a B in the next grading period.

Cultivating Patience and Delaying Gratification

In today’s world of instant gratification, teaching kids to be patient is a valuable life lesson. Learning to delay rewards and focus on long-term goals develops resilience, determination, and self-control.

Example: To teach a child about delayed gratification, have them plant and care for a flower or vegetable from seed. As they patiently nurture their plant over time, they will learn the value of waiting for the eventual bloom or harvest, instilling the concept of delayed rewards.

Breaking Goals into Manageable Steps

Large goals can be daunting, even for adults. For kids, breaking them down into smaller, manageable steps can make a world of difference. This approach provides a clear roadmap and allows them to celebrate their achievements along the way, boosting motivation.

Example: A child who aspires to write a short story can start by setting milestones for brainstorming ideas, creating an outline, writing a specific number of paragraphs each day, and finally, editing and polishing the story.

Recognizing Small Successes

Kids often feel motivated when they see progress, no matter how small. Encourage them to recognize and celebrate their achievements, no matter how minor they may seem! These small successes act as building blocks, giving them the confidence to tackle more challenging tasks.

Example: If a student has consistently improved their spelling quiz scores, acknowledge their hard work and progress with specific, intentional praise—even if they haven’t reached their ultimate goal yet.

Encouraging Perseverance through Setbacks

Setbacks are a natural part of any goal-setting journey. Teach kids not to be discouraged by failure but to see it as a chance to learn and grow. Help them develop resilience by focusing on the lessons learned from their setbacks and encouraging them to keep trying.

Example: If a student doesn’t make the sports team they were aiming for, help them see it as an opportunity to work on specific skills and try again in the future.

Incorporating goal-setting strategies into our educational approach can empower kids with valuable life skills that will serve them well into adulthood. By recognizing small successes and understanding the importance of patience, they will be better equipped to navigate challenges and achieve their dreams.
