Teaching kids to calm their minds and bodies is a simple, yet powerful tool to help foster self-management skills. Coping techniques like a deep breathing exercise is a healthy way for kids to manage their emotions when they are faced with frustration, anxiety, or other big feelings.
Use these steps to help kids take a Deep Breath Break. (Hint: This is an excellent technique to partner with the Skill Builder Reset & Relax!)
What is a Deep Breath Break?
Step 1
Close your eyes. Breathe in. Breathe out.
Step 2
Listen as far away as you can hear. Deep breath in and deep breath out.
Step 3
Place your hand on your belly and breathe in, feeling your belly go in.
Step 4
Keep your hand on your belly and breathe out, feeling your belly go out.
Step 5
Drop your hands to your sides. Relax your entire body. One last deep breath in and one last deep breath out.
Deep breathing exercises help to calm children by slowing them down—putting the brakes on racing hearts and racing minds. Taking a few slow, deep breaths can allow kids (and adults, too!) to respond to stress in a healthier way. Whether your student just took a spill on the playground, or got into an argument with a friend, try this simple exercise to help them feel calm and ready to reset.
